Subliminal Touching

I really enjoyed the short section “Subliminal Touch” on page 122 of Ackerman’s book. She discusses various experiments where people become more affable to strangers because of insignificant touching. It seems to me that friendly touch is a very fast way to connect with people, and I think there is a definite correlation between how extroverted people are and how comfortable they are with touching people they aren't intimate with.

  1. Yeah, I also thought that section was really interesting, especially the study about how the student thought the librarian smiled at him when in reality she just touched his hand. Or how people were more likely to return money or help someone if they had been touched. It must be like you said that it is a quick connection to people.

What strikes me odd is that section combined with the section on the rank of a person that touches another. Like for example, how a superior will touch an inferior first? Do those two sections seem to clash with one another or blend in together?

  2. Insignificant touching can definitely be a fast way to make friends and something perhaps more people should take into account.

  3. Fine, Zane, but give me a little more. From the text. Or a personal story. Expand.
